Frequently asked questions
Before you buy
Which phones does Finite Phone work on?
Finite Phone works on a Pixel 6 or newer, or a Samsung Galaxy phone, with Android 14 or newer.
We're adding Motorola phones next.
It doesn't work on iPhones, other Android phones, work phones or phones with a work profile. You keep your carrier, plan and number.
How is Finite Phone different from other blockers?
With Finite Phone, unblocking takes 48 hours, and there's no emergency pass. Most blockers can be turned off on the phone, with a pass or by uninstalling them. Android's own screen time limits can be changed or turned off in Settings at any time.
How much does it cost?
Finite Phone is $29 a year, plus any tax where you live. There's no other fee.
It renews each year until you cancel. We email you 30 days before each renewal. You can cancel any time on your account page.
Why a subscription?
Our server times every 48-hour wait and runs your account page, where you remove Finite Phone. The price pays for both, and for keeping the website lists up to date.
Is there a free trial?
No. The 30-day refund takes its place.
How do I get Finite Phone?
Orders aren't open right now. Join the waitlist and we'll email you when they open. Checkout then asks for your email address, and you pay on Stripe's page. We email you a link to set up the phone, from a computer with its cable.
Do banking apps and tap-to-pay work?
Yes to both. Banking apps install from Google Play and work as they do on any Android phone. Finite Phone doesn't change Android itself, so their security checks still pass. Google Wallet works too, so you can tap to pay.
What if your servers go down, or the company closes?
If our servers go down, your phone keeps every block, even through a restart. Nothing you asked to unblock comes back while they're down.
If we ever close, we'll email you at least 30 days before and refund the unused part of your year. We'll also tell your phone to remove Finite Phone. If it misses that, a factory reset removes it, and erases everything on the phone.
Will I still get Android updates?
Yes. Android and its security updates come from your phone's maker as always, and Finite Phone never holds them back. Finite Phone updates itself, and Android shows its own notice when it does.
Does it work outside the US?
We sell Finite Phone only to customers in the United States. If you travel, it keeps working wherever your phone does.
Can I set it up on my kid's phone?
No. Finite Phone is made for adults, 18 or older, to put on their own phone. It isn't a parental control.
Blocking
How does Finite Phone block apps and websites?
Setup makes the Finite Phone app your phone's device owner, the Android role made for managing work phones. That role lets it hide apps, keep them closed during a lock, and block websites.
Your lock screen then says the phone belongs to Finite Phone, and Settings says Finite Phone manages it. Android also shows its own notice about managed phones, which no app can turn off.
Is anything blocked when I start?
Only a few things, on every phone. Apps installed from outside Google Play and, on a Galaxy, the Galaxy Store are hidden, and so is every web browser but Chrome. A few sites built to get around blocks won't open.
Chrome's suggested articles on new tabs are off, and the Google app's Discover feed is closed. Everything else stays open until you pick it.
What happens to an app when I block it?
It's hidden, not deleted. It's off your home screen and app list and won't open, and its data stays on your phone. Its Lite version and the copies we know of are blocked with it, and so is its website unless you untick it.
If you install it again, it's hidden as soon as it's back. When it's unblocked, or Finite Phone is removed, it comes back as it was.
Are there apps I can't block?
Yes. Finite Phone won't block, lock or limit these:
- The phone's basic apps, like phone, messages, camera and settings.
- Finite Phone, Google Play, the Google app and Chrome.
- Apps Google Play files under Finance, Medical, Health and Fitness, Maps and Navigation, or Tools.
- A short list of others, like Google Maps and password apps.
A few trading and betting apps, like Robinhood and Coinbase, can still be blocked.
Does it block websites?
Yes, in Chrome, the one browser Finite Phone leaves on the phone. You can block one site by its address, like reddit.com, or a whole list of sites. The lists are Social media, Adult sites, Gambling sites, Shows and movies, Popular news front pages, Other endless sites and Browser games.
Popular news front pages blocks the front pages of 50 big news sites and leaves their stories open.
Can I make website blocking stricter?
Yes. In Strict mode, every site is blocked except the ones on your list, our own sites, and the sign-in and payment pages that sites need. You switch modes on your account page. After your first day, switching back to Standard takes 48 hours.
A site you add opens at once if it's on our suggested list, and 48 hours later if not. In Strict, a card payment that asks your bank to confirm may not finish on the website.
Can I lock apps on a schedule or set a daily limit?
Yes, in the Finite Phone app. Lock an app once, for 15 minutes to 24 hours, or on a schedule, like weeknights from 9 PM to 7 AM. Or give it a daily limit in minutes or opens. When that runs out, it locks until 4 AM.
Making a schedule or a limit stricter takes effect at once, and loosening one takes 48 hours. Once a lock is set, there's no early unlock, not even from us.
Does it block Reels or Shorts inside an app?
No. A block covers a whole app, and Finite Phone doesn't block videos inside apps.
For an app you still use, you can lock it, give it a daily limit, add a short pause before it opens, or turn it gray.
Does it block links that open inside other apps?
Not when the app opens the page in its own window. Website blocks apply only in Chrome, not to a page another app opens in its own window.
Can I install apps from outside Google Play?
No, apart from the Galaxy Store on a Samsung Galaxy phone. An app you blocked is hidden as soon as it's on the phone, whichever store installed it. An app from a downloaded file won't install, and one put on over a USB cable is hidden.
Unblocking and removal
How does unblocking work?
Tap Unblock on anything you've blocked, in the Finite Phone app or on your account page. It comes back 48 hours later, even on your first day. Until then, you can keep it blocked.
An hour before, your phone shows a notification with a Keep it blocked button. If it would come back between 10 PM and 9 AM, the notification comes at 9 PM the evening before.
Can I turn a website list off?
Yes. Unblock it in the Finite Phone app or on your account page, and its sites open 48 hours later. You can also unblock one site on a list and keep the rest blocked.
What if I need something unblocked in an emergency?
The wait is still 48 hours. There's no emergency pass or code, and we won't shorten a wait if you write to us. Finite Phone won't block the apps for calls, messages, maps and banking, and emergency calls always work.
Can I turn it off?
There's no off switch on the phone. You remove Finite Phone on your account page. It comes off the phone 48 hours later. You can change your mind any time before then. A factory reset also removes it right away, and erases everything on the phone.
We won't shorten the 48 hours, even if you write to us.
Cancelling your subscription is separate. It stops the renewal. When your paid year ends, Finite Phone comes off the phone 48 hours later.
In your first 24 hours after setup, removal doesn't wait 48 hours. It happens the next time your phone checks in with Finite Phone, usually within 15 minutes, or right away if you open the Finite Phone app.
What happens if I factory reset the phone?
A factory reset erases the whole phone, Finite Phone included, and what's left is an ordinary Android phone. A reset doesn't cancel your subscription. To put Finite Phone back, run setup again from your account page with a USB cable.
Setup
How do I set up Finite Phone?
From a computer, with your phone on its USB cable. Sign in at my.finitephone.com/setup in Chrome or Edge, on Windows, Mac or a Chromebook, and follow the 7 steps. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes. The cable has to carry data, not only charge.
Android lets an app manage a phone that's already set up only from a computer. Every other way needs a freshly reset phone.
Is it safe to let a website reach my phone over the cable?
The setup page reaches your phone only over the cable, while the page is open, after you allow it on the phone. It runs on my.finitephone.com, in your own browser, once you sign in. Before it blocks anything, it shows you everything it will block. When it finishes, it turns off USB debugging and Developer options.
Your app list stays in the browser. Only the app names reach our server, once, to check which can be blocked, and we don't keep them.
Why do I have to sign out of my accounts first?
Android won't let an app manage a phone while any account is signed in, including the ones apps make for themselves, like WhatsApp's. The setup page lists each one and shows how to remove it.
A few apps sign out only when you uninstall them, so you reinstall those and restore them from their own backup. Then you sign back in to Google, so have your password ready, and another way to confirm it's you, like a backup code.
Does setup wipe my phone?
No. Setup never wipes the phone, and your photos and text messages stay on it.
Signing out can still cost a few things. Google Wallet deletes a digital car key when the Google account is removed. Passkeys and authenticator codes that aren't synced may not come back. Back up the phone first, and check that anything you rely on is synced.
Does it work on a work phone?
No. Setup won't finish on a phone your employer manages, or on one with a work profile, a private space or a second user. If the work profile is yours, remove it before setup.
Your account
How do I cancel?
Cancel any time on your account page, at my.finitephone.com. Cancelling stops the renewal, and you keep Finite Phone until the end of the year you've paid for. Removing Finite Phone is separate, and doesn't cancel your subscription.
What is your refund policy?
You can get a full refund within 30 days of your first payment. Email support@finitephone.com, and you don't need to give a reason. This applies once per customer.
A refund ends your subscription, and Finite Phone comes off the phone 48 hours later. In your first 24 hours after setup, it comes off the next time your phone checks in with Finite Phone, usually within 15 minutes.
Can I put it on two phones?
No. One subscription covers one phone, and it doesn't work on tablets or computers. To move to a new phone, remove Finite Phone from the old one, or tell setup you no longer have it, then set up the new one.
Privacy
What does Finite Phone see on my phone?
We receive your blocks and settings and a few facts about the phone. We never see your browsing, and we don't receive your contacts, messages, photos or how much you use your apps.
- At setup: the phone's model, a one-way code made from its serial number, and your first block list. App names reach us once, to check which can be blocked, and aren't kept.
- About every 15 minutes: which settings the phone has applied, and whether each app you blocked on your account page is hidden.
- When you change something in the app: the change.
- Once a day: a report on how the app is running.
Your minutes and opens stay on the phone. Your other apps and Google still collect what they always have.
